Patchwork Treetop Star

Escrito por Better Homes

Materials:
Assorted fabric scraps
1/2-yard small-print fabric for piping and backing
1/2-yard muslin for patchwork backing
Rotary cutter, mat, and ruler; sewing thread
5 feet 1/2-inch-diameter upholstery cord
Polyester fiberfill
1 1/2-inch-diameter button to cover
3-inch ribbon for hanger

Instructions:
Unless otherwise stated, use 1/4-inch seam allowances to assemble squares into strips and blocks and 1/2-inch seam allowances for all other sewing.

Using the rotary cutter, mat, and ruler, cut fabric scraps into 25 squares, each measuring 3 1/2X3 1/2 inches. Sew squares into five strips of five squares each. Join the strips into a block that measures five squares by five squares. Hand- or machine-quilt diagonally across the squares of the patchwork.

Print the 5-point star pattern. Cut the shape out of the patchwork block and another for the backing from the print fabric, allowing for 1/2-inch seams.

Cut 3-inch-wide strips on the bias from remaining print fabric. Piece strips together along the short ends to form one long strip; encase cord in strip and sew close to cord, creating covered piping.

Sew piping to star front along seams. Sew the front to the back, leaving an opening for turning.

Turn, press, and stuff firmly with fiberfill. Slipstitch the opening closed.

Cover the button according to the manufacturer's directions. Sew it to the middle of the star. Pull the button tight to create a tufted shape.

Tack the ribbon scrap across the back of the star for hanging.
